The SUNY Institute for Local News will host the first gathering of its statewide leaders April 10-11 at the campus of SUNY Oneonta.
Of SUNY’s 64 campuses, 15 of them are engaged in some form of local news support in the communities around their campus. This October, SUNY Chancellor King made the work an official initiative for all SUNY campuses and announced 20 summer internships in local news as part of the drive. In Fall 2024, 75 SUNY students produced 160 stories for 12 local news publications around New York. This Spring, nearly 200 students are active in a local news role.
The Oneonta gathering is free and hosted in partnership with the Center for Community News. The Lumina Foundation is a funder of the SUNY ILN program, and CCN is funded by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and University of Vermont College of Arts and Sciences.
The event will also host non-SUNY schools in New York serving various news deserts, as well as other national leaders in local news replenishment.
Interested attendees should fill out this form to register and help shape the program. There is no charge to attend. Guests should be in the field of campus-led reporting for local news desert challenges.
Any questions about this event can be directed to SUNY ILN Editor Todd Franko at toddfranko@gmail.com.
